Waste conference outlines current status of plastics recycling

upvc waste conferenceThe plastics recycling industry was one of the subjects covered at a London conference designed to debate the status of “end of waste” initiatives.

The conference – organised by news website letsrecycle.com – brought together figures involved in recycling a range of materials, in order to discuss current and proposed legislation at a national and EU level.

The consensus was that ‘end of waste’ criteria are unlikely to be set for the plastics recycling sector, with the majority of delegates believing that Quality Protocols – the initiative developed by WRAP and the Environment Agency – will be used in the UK as the primary measure of waste avoidance.

Meanwhile, Peter Davis, director general of the British Plastics Federation (BPF), updated delegates on discussions in the European Commission about plastics recycling.

“The Commission has to clear up the definitions and ensure there are no gaps. We expect a report on the proposals in March,” he reported.
